Why do word and character counts matter?

A character counter is the simplest way to tell whether a piece of text fits the space it is written for. The meta title and description shown in search results, social media posts, text messages and form fields all come with fixed limits; anything past the limit is cut off, usually in the middle of a sentence.

The word count matters more on the content side. It is what you check to hit the required length of an assignment, an article or a blog post, to price translation and transcription work, and to estimate how long a text takes to read.

This tool brings both sides together on one screen and runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server or stored; close the tab and nothing is left behind.

How the counts are calculated

Measure How it is calculated
Words Runs of letters and digits count as words. Apostrophes and hyphens do not split a word, so "e-mail" counts as one.
Characters Every character counts, including spaces and line breaks. The second counter leaves the spaces out.
Sentences A full stop, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis is treated as the end of a sentence.
Paragraphs Blocks of text separated by a blank line count as separate paragraphs.
Reading time Based on an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute.
Speaking time Based on the 130 words per minute pace commonly used for presentations and voice-overs.
