What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of information that sums up your skills, your past projects and the certificates you have earned.
It gives your projects credibility and gives industry professionals a better sense of what you can do.
What you include in your online portfolio naturally depends on your field and your expertise.
Are a portfolio and a CV the same thing?
A portfolio and a CV are often used interchangeably. Even though both are used during a job search, there are important differences between them.
First, since both are used to present a skill set for a possible role, it is fair to say that they are similar in function.
A CV gives an overview of your qualifications and experience, while a portfolio provides the evidence for it.
A portfolio and a CV are not the same thing, but a portfolio definitely completes a CV. The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” shows how much meaning and emotion a single image can convey compared with written text.
Say you are a front-end developer and your CV only mentions your past work experience.
Using words to describe your projects is nice, but how can a potential employer really get to know your work without seeing your expertise first-hand? This is where a portfolio goes beyond a list of general work experience and becomes a living, breathing example of your skills!

Why does a portfolio matter?

Whether you are a developer, a product designer, a data scientist, a game developer or you work in another creative field, you need a way to showcase your work: a portfolio!
A portfolio makes your work visible and puts it in front of the right people.
Unlike the static, black-and-white world of a traditional CV, an online portfolio brings your projects to life. It turns them into a more powerful and interactive experience.
A personal portfolio shows hiring managers who you are, the thinking behind your work and whether you are the right person for a particular job or project.

With a user-friendly design, a portfolio brings together the projects that show the very best of your work. It shows that you are professional and reliable.
A personal portfolio also gives you credibility. When a hiring manager types your name into a search engine, they should be able to find you easily. Having no visibility online can leave a bad impression, no matter how talented you are.
Whether you are a designer or a front-end developer, you are more than a bulleted list of achievements. A portfolio site gives depth and detail.
It lets you tell the story of the projects you are proud of in your own words, and share the thinking and the personality behind them.
How do you build a developer portfolio?
Recruiters review a large number of portfolios, and the time they will spend on yours is limited. So keep your portfolio as simple as you can.
You can follow the steps below or use the template we have prepared for you.
1. Introduce yourself
The first section of your portfolio is where you introduce yourself. You have 50 milliseconds to make an impression, so use them well.
Here you can share the following:
- Your name and profession
- How you got into software
- Your areas of expertise
Note: you earn bonus points if you add a photo of yourself so recruiters can see what you look like.
2. Introduce your tech stack
You can add your tech stack list to show which technologies you work with. For example:
- Programming languages: JavaScript, Python, Java
- Frameworks: React, Node.js, Django
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB
One important note: don't list everything — only list the skills you are strong in and want to work with again. 📨

3. Showcase your projects
Projects are one of the most important parts of your portfolio.
You can showcase your skills by adding your best and most original projects here. In other words, focus on quality, not quantity.
You can organize your project details like this:
- Project name and a short description
- Technologies used
- Live demo and code repository links
4. Add your certificates
Certificates are a great way to show your areas of expertise. Add the certificates you hold to prove your technical skills.
5. Share your social media profiles
There are basically two non-negotiable social networks for developers:
- GitHub
Adding these links gives recruiters a better sense of your personality and of who you are beyond your “About me” section.
