CSS

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) means cascading style sheets. It is a stylesheet and markup language used for the presentation and formatting of content on websites, including font type, text size, color, spacing, border, and location of HTML information.

A Brief History of CSS

  • In 1994, Håkon Wium Lie proposed the idea of CSS to allow web designers to change the layout, colors, and font types of their websites.
  • The first version of CSS was invented in 1996.
  • In 1998, CSS2 was released and then work began on CSS3.
  • The first draft of CSS 3 was published in 1999.
  • Today, CSS3 is being used.

How Does CSS Work?

The browser loads the HTML page and then converts the HTML into DOM (Document Object Model). The browser then retrieves the CSS page that contains embedded images and CSS codes connected to the HTML document.

The browser that parses the fetched CSS sorts the different rules according to the selectors. It identifies the incoming styles according to the CSS commands in the DOM and starts applying the styles as needed. After the CSS rules are applied, the page is arranged in the structure it should appear and the visual display of the page as it should be is displayed on the screen.
